Once again, a recording made just prior to the Big Swing Face recording sessions. The tune is Naptown Blues. How about Ray Starling on piano and Ernie Watts on Sax!

Superb big band jazz, recorded just days before the Big Swing Face album was recorded. I love Jay Corre's playing, and his arrangement of this great Horace Silver tune. I also like Buddy's choice to up the tempo from the Swingin' New Big Band version.

Another track recorded at a concert just days before recording began at The Chez for the Big Swing Face album. Oh how I love Jay Corre on sax! And how about Buddy's drum break at 3:30?!!

Here's a private recording made on a portable cassette player. Definitely not professional quality. But those of us who are really into Buddy never get tired of hearing him - especially when he solos! This is from Reading, PA on 9 April, 1973.

Because of viewer interest in the Dave Carpenter, Buddy Rich Duet I recently posted, I decided to post another gem. Here's Dave & Buddy with the marvelous Bill Cunliffe - the same excellent trio captured so beautifully on video at the Berlin Jazz Festival 1984. Priceless stuff! Tune is Tee Bag.

Here's one for the BR connoisseur. This audio demonstrates how Buddy loved to feature other musicians he respected. It also shows Buddy's amazing versatility. Here he lays the foundation, then beautifully supports Dave Carpenter's improvisations in Rock Shuffle (or Shuffle Rock, if you prefer).

If I may... A tribute to my home town, Cleveland Ohio. Cleveland was the butt of many a joke back in the day. But Cleveland loved Buddy, and Buddy appreciated Cleveland! Check out the audience reactions, and what Buddy says after the song ends.

My dad and my brother were both drummers and when I was 5 or 6 my dad had buddy rich and gene Krupa on the old reel tapes and I started listening to them and I had a great education in playing drums and I still play but buddy was the best drummer in his generation. He paved the way for other drummers that came after him.

What an amazing clip. Buddy sits in on Ed's kit, which is a truly difficult thing to do. When you are a drummer, moving a cymbal a 1/2" makes a big difference, so sitting behind another dude's kit that is radically different from yours and blasting away like Buddy does is breathtaking. Second, he takes time to compliment the band. There has been a lot of talk about how hard Buddy was on his bands, but he takes time to tell these guys how brilliantly they played. Thanks so much for the video!

I traveled with him 76-77 being his rehearsal drummer and roadie along with Steve Peck. Buddy always sounded good, but there were times when we all knew something special was happening. He did have "Rich-isms" on certain charts that remained pretty much unchanged night to night. I asked him about it once and he said "look, these are light fills, they're whole purpose is to make it comfortable for the band to come in, that's the job...when it's my time i don't know what's going to happen." Imagine being a young drummer (I was 24 at the time and watching him play two sets every night from a perfect position.) All during that time only once he had me sit down next to him and listen to his drum solo on Channel One (Alan Gauvin taped the band every night, his collection is rare for that time period.)...He said "you know, tonight I thought the drum solo was really good, there was nothing I couldn't do." So, his standard for himself was so high, most nights were just "work" and some had meaning to him. The fact that this was the Killer Force Band made him raise his level most nights, because if he didn't, the brass would leave him in the dust...thanks to Dave Stahl who never let up. Some would argue this was his finest period.

This guy was born 5 years after the titanic sank..when men wore top hats , bussels of whalebone held out dresses, and large feathered hats adorned womens heads. Cars were few on the rds.. Just for a bit of perspective..not a modern post 40s rocker..yet he rocked and rolled all of them
